As numerous supporters in the UK concentrate on their clubs' early-season fortunes or debate upcoming autumn internationals, the battle for World Cup 2027 qualifying rages on unabated.
Chile secured their second consecutive appearance at the competition with a stunning qualifying win against Samoa recently, leaving only one remaining spot to be claimed for the host nation in two years. Meanwhile, the Paraguayan side stunned Brazil by twenty points in the first leg of their playoff.
The return match is scheduled on Saturday in the Brazilian city, near São Paulo, while Brazil's squad attempts to emulate their women's achievement and secure qualification for the first occasion.
Whether Paraguay manages a shock overall victory, or Brazil recovers following manager their coach's recent dismissal, the lineup for next month's qualifying event in Dubai will then be finalized. Namibia, Belgium, and the Samoan side have already secured spots for the Dubai-based competition from 8-18 November.
Many other teams have also earned their places. The Hong Kong China team achieved first-time World Cup entry after beating Korea by a large margin in July, and the Zimbabwean squad will make a comeback to rugby union's premier tournament for the first occasion since 1991 by virtue of winning the African championship.
The consequence of Chile's playoff success ensures that Los Condores will play against Italy for the first occasion next month during the fall test series, replacing Samoa who are obligated to compete in the Dubai tournament.
World Rugby's chief executive described Chile an "exciting and fast-emerging force" in confirming the forthcoming match in Genoa. While domestic rugby promotional efforts aim for larger crowds, rugby in Chile is thriving. A capacity crowd of over 20,000 saw the qualifying win in Viña del Mar, and manager Pablo Lemoine has guided the squad on an upward trajectory since taking over in recent years.
The 50-year-old former Uruguay international forward has been influencing the game for many years: signed by Bristol in the 1990s, he memorably ran straight through England defensive line to score at the 2003 global tournament.
His impact as national coach has been equally powerful: Chile have climbed to seventeenth place, their highest-ever position. During the previous tournament in France, they were defeated four times, conceding over two hundred points and scoring twenty-seven, featuring a heavy defeat against England.
However, they proudly found the positives, and following the tournament draw in Australia on 3 December, Lemoine can start preparations seriously. They faced Scotland previously, losing by a significant margin before 24,000 supporters, and although they were defeated across two legs by the Uruguayan side in the first 2027 playoff, they achieved a narrow away victory in the Uruguayan capital.
Samoa, in contrast, have not missed all Rugby World Cup for decades, but are presently languishing in sixteenth place in the men's rankings. They were winless in this year's Pacific Nations Cup, resulting in playoff misery against Chile, and the need to meet teams like Belgium adds further difficulty for the rugby-loving country.
Apart from individual nations' performances, it is important to consider how changed the expanded tournament will look in 2027. For the first time, there will be a knockout stage with six groups of four teams instead of four groups of five. Pool-stage jeopardy is much lower because the top four third-place sides will additionally qualify.
The organizers, the Australian team, are currently ranked seventh in the global rankings, meaning they would fall short on top seeding and could meet one of South Africa, New Zealand, the Irish, France, the English, or the Pumas in their group. They may climb into the highest seeds during a busy November, however: the English team, the Italian side, Ireland, and the French team are their opponents, with a match versus Japan in the capital also scheduled for October 25th.
Wales, on the other hand, are teetering in 12th, with the Japanese side behind, and the consequences of dropping to thirteenth and into the third seeding group are possibly significant.
An additional new dimension for the next World Cup is the participation of five nations from the Americas: the Argentine team, Uruguay, USA, Canada, and the Chilean squad – with either Paraguay or Brazil potentially becoming the sixth. From the governing body's viewpoint, American interest is positive, especially with the 2031 World Cup set to be staged by the USA, and the host selection for the 2035 tournament was initiated recently.
For now, however. The second installment of Brazil versus Paraguay prepares a four-way Dubai shootout, along with a possible rankings shake-up throughout Europe in the coming month. Regardless of how things pan out, Chile's successful qualification for a second consecutive World Cup has undoubtedly made them as a clear triumphant example.
