The UK authorities has included an additional eleven more nations to its official advisory roster regarding the dangers of toxic alcohol toxicity from tainted beverages.

The updated advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "a global increase in the incidence of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol toxicity.

Only a few weeks ago, officials had already included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, following multiple high-profile incidents such as the tragic death of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as minimal doses of methanol can cause permanent eye damage or death within 12 to 48 hrs.

What is Methanol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a toxic substance commonly utilized in antifreeze, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not designed for ingestion.

Although it is naturally produced during the production of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers bring it down to low, safe levels for human consumption through the distillation process.

But in some countries, it is surreptitiously added into alcoholic drinks to save money, and because it is flavorless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Official Advice for Travellers

Foreign Office representative the minister emphasized that every traveler should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.

"While drinking spirits in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.

"If something appears suspicious, for example a fatigue that's way worse than usual or sight issues – seek medical attention fast."

The full roster of countries listed as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
